For this year’s A to Z Challenge, I have chosen the theme of dragons as characters. Whether they appear in film, TV, cartoons or literature, these dragons may be the star of the show or just a supporting character.
F is for Fafnir, the dwarf who changed into a dragon in Nordic mythology. His family cursed by a ring, Fafnir changes into a dragon to guard the treasure paid by the Norse gods for the death of Fafnir’s brother.
As a dragon, Fafnir is full of greed and is strong and aggressive. He has a single-minded desire to protect the treasure and could breathe out a poison to help protect his hoard.
This late 13th century tale is told in Völsunga saga (“Saga of the Volsungs”) and is said to have inspired J.R.R. Tolkien’s Smaug in The Hobbit.
