For this year’s A to Z Challenge, I have chosen the theme of dragons as characters. Whether they appear in film, TV, cartoons or literature, these dragons may be the star of the show or just a supporting character.
C is for Canth, the large brown dragon from Anne McCaffery’s Pern series. Dragons in her series are large, four legged beasts with wings that are paired with riders with whom the dragons “impress” upon hatching. They speak telepathically to their riders and other humans of their choosing. They do breathe fire after chewing firestone.
Canth and his rider, F’nor, are supporting characters in the series. Together they go on two ventures of note – one an attempt to jump off planet to the Red Star in order to destroy the source of “Thread” (a silvery thread like substance that destroys everything it touches) and another to travel back in time to allow a group of young dragons to mature and battle the Thread in the present day. Together the two also rediscover fire lizards from which the dragons were created.
As are many of the dragons in the Pern series, Canth is fearless, loyal and brave.
