For this year’s A to Z Challenge, I have chosen the theme of dragons as characters. Whether they appear in film, TV, cartoons or literature, these dragons may be the star of the show or just a supporting character.
I is for the Ice Dragon in the children’s short story by the same name by George R.R. Martin. In this story, first published in 1980, the Ice Dragon is a creature of legend and fear who leaves a cold, desolate world in its wake. It befriends a young girl named Adara who was born during one of the coldest winters. Her skin is cold to the touch. She first rides the Ice Dragon at age 5. At age 7, they must save the world from the fiery northern dragons.
The short story first appeared in the anthology, Dragons of Light, and was a story for adults. It was re-worked in 2007 as children’s book, meant for 7- to 12-year-olds. This story doesn’t take place in the Game of Thrones world of Westeros, according to the author.
If you missed previous entries:
A is for Aura
B is for Blazey
C is for Canth
D is for Draco
E is for Elliott
F is for Fafnir
G is for Gwythaints
H is for Haku
I’ve not heard of the ice dragon before, but I’ve had some cold nights where now I suspect it must have been flying overhead. How interesting that a short story was reworked as a children’s book.
