For this year’s A to Z Challenge, I have chosen the theme of dragons as characters. Whether they appear in film, TV, cartoons or literature, these dragons may be the star of the show or just a supporting character.
P is for Puff, the dragon from the 1978 animated television special, Puff the Magic Dragon. The show was based off the song by the same name by Peter, Paul and Mary. The song is based off a poem by Leonard Lipton (and is NOT about drugs). There were two follow up specials – in 1979, Puff in the Land of Living Lies and in 1982, Puff and the Incredible Mr. Nobody.
Puff is green with straggly dark green hair on his head. He doesn’t have wings. He is a very friendly, helpful dragon. In the first special he helps a little boy named Jackie that has so much fear and doubt that he has stopped talking. In the next special, he helps Sandy, a girl who has developed a persistent habit of making up absurd lies on most occasions. And in the final special, he helps a boy named Terry who has an overactive imagination and has trouble making friends. Puff helps each of these kids.
