For this year’s A to Z Challenge, I have chosen the theme of dragons as characters. Whether they appear in film, TV, cartoons or literature, these dragons may be the star of the show or just a supporting character.
N is for Norbert, the Norwegian Ridgeback baby dragon from the Harry Potter book series. Or should I say Norberta as the baby dragon is later revealed to be a female. She was hatched from her egg in Hagrid’s hut on the grounds of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
Noberta appears in the first Harry Potter book, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. In the book, the young dragon became violent as she grew and was deemed too dangerous to keep after it bit Ron’s hand. Hagrid then sent the dragon to Romania where Ron’s brother Charlie worked with dragons.
In the film adaptation, the dragon’s presence remains a secret. It is Harry and Hermione who hand Norbert over to Charlie’s friends. In the films, it is never revealed that the baby dragon is a girl and his affectionate nature might indicate that he was a male in the movies (as the females are known to be violent).
The description in the book refers to Norbert as looking “like a crumpled black umbrella” with large spiny wings, a skinny body and a long snout with wide nostrils and orange eyes. And here is clip of how he looked in the film.
