K is for Kalessin #AtoZChallenge

For this year’s A to Z Challenge, I have chosen the theme of dragons as characters. Whether they appear in film, TV, cartoons or literature, these dragons may be the star of the show or just a supporting character.

**I got busy last week and missed K and L so doing them today.

K is for Kalessin, the elder dragon from Ursula Le Guin’s fantasy world of Earthsea. He appears in such novels as The Farthest Shore and Tehanu. He is a powerful iron-colored dragon, a creature of pure magic.

Kalessin plays a minor but important role in Tehanu as he saves the main character, Tenar, from jumping for a cliff while under a spell. The dragon is called for help by Therru, a half-human, half dragon. It is Kalessin who reveals the child’s real name is Tehanu and offers to take her away, but Therru/Tehanu refuses, opting to stay with Tenar.

The extreme metal band, Keeper of Kalessin, take their name from this dragon character.

If you missed previous entries:

A is for Aura

B is for Blazey

C is for Canth

D is for Draco

E is for Elliott

F is for Fafnir

G is for Gwythaints

H is for Haku

I is for the Ice Dragon

J is for Jabberwocky
