I is for The Invisible Scarlet O’Neil #AtoZChallenge

For this year’s A to Z Challenge, I have chosen the theme of comic strips. For those young ones out there, a comic strip is a few drawn panels telling a story which appears in the newspaper. The first daily comic strip began in 1907, but the color comics (Sunday funnies) actually began back in 1894.

I is for The Invisible Scarlet O’Neil, which ran from 1940 and 1956. It has also gone by the names Scarlet O’Neil (1949-1954) and Stainless Steel (1954-1956). The strip was the product of Russell Stamm who had previously been an assistant to Chester Gould who developed Dick Tracy.

This strip follows Scarlet O’Neil, a superhero with the power of invisibility. As time progressed, Scarlet’s powers were less often shown and in 1954 when the title of the strip changed to Stainless Steel, the character of Scarlet disappeared. A little over a year later, the comic strip was cancelled.
