For this year’s A to Z Challenge, I have chosen the theme of songs about magic. (Fitting for a fantasy author.)
L is for “Love Potion No. 9” by The Clovers, an American rhythm and blues group. This song was written by Jerry Leiber (lyricist) and Mike Stroller (composer). The Clovers released the song in 1959 where it rose to number 23 on the R&B charts. The song was covered by the British band The Searchers in 1964.
The song is about a man seeking help finding love. Once he takes ‘Love Potion #9,’ a magic potion, he falls in love with everything he sees, kissing whatever is in front of him. The line where he kisses a policeman (who breaks his bottle of Love Potion #9) caused the song to be banned by some radio stations.
