I is for I Put a Spell on You #AtoZChallenge

For this year’s A to Z Challenge, I have chosen the theme of songs about magic. (Fitting for a fantasy author.)

I is for “I Put a Spell on You” by Screamin’ Jay Hawkins. He intended it to be a blues Ballard and in 1955 recorded it as such. But that version was not released at the time. Instead, the version released in 1956 was recorded during a recording session where the participants got a little drunk. The resulting recording featured more screaming and grunting sounds. This version was banned from radio due to its outrageous style. The record still sold over a million copies, and while it was one of his most successful songs, it never reached the Billboard charts.

It has become a classic cult song covered by a variety of artists such as Creedence Clearwater Revival, Nina Simone, and Annie Lennox. It was also sung by Bette Midler in the film Hocus Pocus.
