Recipe of the Month: M and M Cookies

IMG_3584I remember having M&M cookies as a kid. Yes, they are really just chocolate chip cookies with M&Ms instead of chocolate chips but just think of all the colors that M&Ms come in. You can do red and green at Christmas, pink and red at Valentine’s Day, and Orange and Black (or brown) for Halloween. And now that you can buy M&Ms in any color online or at candy stores you can now have cookies that match any theme!


2 1/2 cups flour

1 t. salt

1 t. baking soda

1 cup butter or shortening

1 cup packed brown sugar

1/2 cup sugar

2 eggs

2 t. vanilla

2 cups M&Ms (reserve 1/2 cup for decorating)


Preheat oven to 375 degrees.

In mixing bowl, whisk together flour, salt, and baking soda until well blended. In a large mixing bowl, beat butter (or shortening) and sugars with an electric mixer on medium-high speed until light and fluffy. Scrape down sides to ensure everything is well blended. Beat in eggs and vanilla. Stir in flour mixture with a spoon until just blended. Add in 1 1/2 cups M&Ms.

Drop dough by rounded teaspoon on to ungreased cookie sheet. Press several additional M&Ms into each cookie.

Bake one cookie sheet at a time for 9 to 12 minutes or until cookies are golden brown around the edges and just set in the center. Remove cookies to wire rack to cool completely.

Yields about 5 dozen 2 1/2-inch cookies
